Description
Dowager House is a house from the mid-17th century, now divided into three separate units. It is constructed of coursed squared limestone with sandstone dressings and quoins, topped with a stone slate roof featuring coped gables and both plain and moulded kneelers. The building has two ashlar ridge stacks and stands three storeys tall.
The south elevation displays three gabled bays, with the outer bays projecting. There are moulded bands on the first and second floors that form continuous hoodmoulds over the windows. The central doorway has a chamfered surround, a massive lintel, and quoins, leading to a panelled door. This doorway is flanked by two-light recessed and chamfered mullion windows, with a similar window in each of the outer bays. The first floor contains four similar windows, while the second floor has three, all featuring horizontal hoodmoulds.
On the rear elevation, there is a gabled bay to the right with a two-light recessed and chamfered mullion window, alongside a former two-light window that now has a 19th-century half-glazed door. Above this, there is a similar window, and another above that. To the left, a recessed bay has a ground floor lean-to that partly obscures a single light window above. Further left, there are a pair of gabled bays, with the right-hand bay forming a staircase tower that includes two two-light recessed and chamfered mullion windows, along with a blocked two-light window and two single lights to the left.
