Description
The Queens Arms Hotel is a public house located on Bridge Street in Bakewell. It dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century and includes parts of what is likely a 16th-century cruck-framed core. The building is constructed of coursed sandstone and features stone slate and concrete-tile roofs.
The hotel has two storeys, with a two plus two-window arrangement facing Bridge Street and a three plus two-window arrangement on the main entrance front to Market Street. The window openings have painted ashlar surrounds with projecting sills. On the Market Street side, the right section has a part-glazed door with a foot-scraper to the right, and beyond it, there are paired 6/6 sash windows in a mullioned opening. There is also an 8/8 sash window adjacent to the left of the door, and a further 6/6 sash that abuts the quoins of the adjoining range. The first floor features two 8/8 sash windows, with all but the left window on the first floor having slender glazing bars. The adjacent three-bay section has large quoins and 6/6 sash windows. The roof has a hipped left end, with two ashlar ridge stacks and a single-flue end stack on the far right.
On the Bridge Street front, there are two bays to the left that are set forward, featuring 2/2 sash windows. The doorway on the right is set back and has a 20th-century door with a plain overlight above it, along with a 2/2 sash window above. The corner bay has quoins facing right and features paired 2/2 sashes in a mullioned opening beneath an 8/8 sash window.
Inside, a cruck truss is partially exposed in the party wall shared with the premises of John Brocklehurst on Bridge Street.
