Description

Commercial premises, dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with a fragment of a probable 16th-century cruck-framed core. The building is constructed of coursed sandstone with a stone slate roof. The exterior presents a two-storey, five-window facade, arranged in a 1:3:1 configuration; the right-hand bay is incorporated into and structurally linked to the adjacent Queen’s Arms Hotel. The left-hand bay projects slightly and features a segmental carriage arch, now infilled with paired 2/2 sash windows. The central three bays have large quoins on the left side and two segmental carriage arches with ashlar quoins and voussoirs, both currently infilled with plinth walls supporting casement windows with glazing bars serving as shop windows. A boarded door is set within an ashlar surround to the left, and a 6/6 sash window is located to the right. The right-hand bay has an ashlar doorway to the right of the 6/6 sash window. On the first floor, projecting stone sills and ashlar surrounds frame the 6/6 and 8/8 sash windows. A stone stack rises from the ridge line between bays 4 and 5. Inside, the right-hand wall showcases a cruck-truss with full blades, a front wall post rising to a former floor beam with joist holes, a tie beam and collar beneath the apex, a diagonally-set ridge, and a downbrace to the front purlin, which is set lower than the current roof line. A transverse ground floor beam, approximately 2 metres from the cruck-truss, has been raised.
