Description
This early 19th century house, originally shown on Ordnance Survey maps as Government Offices, has been divided into two dwellings and commercial premises. It is constructed of ashlar and deeply-coursed dressed sandstone, with a stone slate roof. The building is three storeys high with a five-window front arranged in a 3:2 configuration, representing a double-depth plan.
Bridge House occupies the three bays to the left. It features ground- and first-floor sill bands and a central doorway with a stone architrave, cornice, and consoles. The doorway is topped with a four-pane overlight. The windows on the ground and first floors are 8/8 sashes with hoodmoulds. The second-floor windows are taller, have flush sills, and contain 8/8 sashes without hoodmoulds. Bridgeway, to the right, is slightly set back and aligns with the same style. The ground-floor bay of Bridgeway has been altered, with a door to the left of an altered opening containing a 6/6 sash beneath a truncated hoodmould. The second-floor windows of Bridgeway have projecting sills and hoodmoulds.
The entire range is topped with an eaves cornice, an ashlar parapet, and gable copings. There are ashlar end stacks, with one on the left truncated, and two matching ridge stacks. The left return has a semi-octagonal projection of three storeys, featuring 6/6 sashes and an embattled parapet.
The interior of Bridge House was inspected and contains an original staircase with columnar newels and square rods to the handrail (many are missing). The first-floor landing has reeded pilasters and a basket arch leading into the semi-octagonal projection, along with six-panel doors.
