Description

Packhorse Bridge is a bridge that was originally built in 1672 and re-erected on its current site in 1959. It is constructed from coursed squared gritstone and features two segmental arches. The bridge has diagonal stepped wing walls and cutwaters on both sides. There is a string band at the base of the upper walls and chamfered copings. On the northwest wing wall, there is a memorial plaque that reads: "This 17th century packhorse bridge, whose original site at Derwent was submerged, was re-erected in 1959 by public subscription as a memorial to John Derry 1854 - 1937, who inspired in others his love for the Derbyshire and Yorkshire hills." The bridge is also recognized as a scheduled monument.
