Description

The Church of St Michael is a church built between 1828 and 1829 by G E Hamilton, with the chancel added by R R Duke in 1877. It was partly rebuilt from 1950 to 1952 after sustaining damage during the war. The church is constructed of coursed squared limestone with gritstone dressings and rock-faced quoins, and it features slate roofs with ridgeback copings on the gable walls.

The structure includes a three-stage embattled western tower, an aisle-less nave, a small north vestry, and a narrow single-bay chancel. The tower has a wide, pointed south door with deeply recessed continuous moulding, and above it is a four-centred arched window with a cavetto architrave and a moulded dripmould. A modern clock is positioned just above this window. The third stage of the tower has a similar but wider opening with louvres, and there are bell openings on all sides of the tower except the east side.

The large west window features cusped panel tracery and a four-centred arched top, while the tower is topped with embattled parapets. The south wall of the nave has three pointed windows with chamfered Y-tracery, and there is a small pointed single light window in the chancel. The east side has a twin lancet window. A plaque above the chancel on the nave gable is inscribed: 'Built AD 1823. Restored AD 1877'. The north wall contains two four-centred arched windows with dripmoulds.

The interior was completely rebuilt in the 1950s and features a crude stone font with vertical bands in relief, which is likely from the 12th century.
