Description
Hadrian's Wall includes milecastles 39 and 40, as well as turrets 38A, 38B, 39A, 39B, and 40A. Constructed around AD 122 and reconstructed in AD 205, the wall features a rubble core with dressed stone faces. The course of the wall runs west from Milking Gap to near Lodhams Slack. There are several stretches of well-preserved wall masonry, approximately 5 meters high. The remains of milecastle 39 can be seen, while milecastle 40 and the turrets are represented by their sites. This site is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
