Description
The Appleton le Moors War Memorial is a tablet set within an arched well-head, located in the churchyard wall of Christ Church, Appleton le Moor’s parish church, which is a Grade I listed building. The well-head, built around 1865 alongside the church and vicarage, stands approximately 4 meters tall and is made of sandstone ashlar. It features a gabled parapet and an arched opening designed in the Transitional style. Originally, this structure protected a well, which was replaced by a pump before 1891. After the First World War, a memorial tablet listing the names of the Fallen was placed within the arch. Later, likely in the 1960s, the open rear of the arch was enclosed with a wall, and a replacement memorial plaque was added, inscribed with "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF/ THE FOLLOWING WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR, 1914-1918" along with five names. At this time, a fence-like grill was also installed at the front of the arch.
