Description
The Abbey Gatehouse is a gatehouse to Byland Abbey, which is now in ruins. It dates from the early 13th century and is constructed of limestone ashlar and rubble. The gatehouse features the remains of a gateway that once led to the abbey, along with a return wall. The gateway has roll-moulded imposts that support roll-moulded capitals, which in turn support a round arch made up of two hollow-moulded orders with a hoodmould. There are also remains of the springer for a vault above the gateway. The return wall includes a pointed doorway with two orders and keeled mouldings, which is now blocked. This doorway is supported by plain imposts with moulded capitals. The return wall has been incorporated into the farm buildings of College Farm, which are not of special interest.
