Description

This water fountain, built in 1870, is made of cast iron and limestone ashlar. It features a U-shaped trough surrounded by a six-course structure, with the trough inscribed with the initials "HMS 1870," which stand for Henry Miles Stapylton. The fountain is designed to provide water from a carved lion's mouth. The Stapylton family owned the Byland and Wass estate from 1739 to the 1880s.
