Description
The gateway to the south of the Church of St Stephen in Robin Hood's Bay is a late 19th-century structure built in memory of A H Cooper, who died in 1893. It features gate piers, a gate, and quadrant walls made of oak and sandstone. The square piers have stepped curved caps and support sturdy gates with panelled lower sections and arcaded designs above the half-rail. The gates are fitted with long, heavy iron hinges and bolts. Only one of the original four ball finials above the stiles remains. The flanking quadrant walls have stepped roll-moulded copings. Attached to the west quadrant wall is an oak and iron lampholder, which consists of a two-stage battered octagonal post that is thinner above a collar, topped with a cast iron gooseneck adorned with ornamental rings.
