Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a church built in 1870 and/or 1876, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott or George Gilbert Scott Junior, and is in the Gothic Revival style. It is constructed of hammer-dressed limestone with sandstone dressings and has a Westmorland slate roof. The church features a 3-bay nave with a south porch and a 2-bay chancel that includes a vestry on the north side.
At the west end, a central buttress supports a bellcote that has four openings. The south porch contains a pointed doorway and a single-light trefoil-headed window above it. The nave has 3-light windows with reticulated tracery on the south side, while the chancel features 2-light windows with curvilinear tracery and a 3-light east window also with curvilinear tracery. The vestry includes an ogee-headed door on the west side and a 2-light window with curvilinear tracery on the east side.
Inside, there is a 13th-century font with a plain bowl supported by six attached shafts that have moulded capitals. The screen was added in 1898-1899 by Temple Moore.
