Description
Nos 7 and 9 Castlegate is a house that was originally a farmhouse, featuring an adjoining former pig-sty and byre, which have now been converted into a bathroom and garage. The building dates from the second half of the 18th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble and has a pantile roof, with brick stacks added in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The house has a hallway entrance plan, with the former pig-sty to the left and the byre to the right. The house itself is two storeys tall, while the pig-sty and byre are each one storey. The house features three first-floor windows and a four-panel door beneath a divided oblong fanlight and stone lintel. To the left of the door is one three-light Yorkshire sash window, and to the right are two three-light Yorkshire sash windows, all with stone sills and lintels. The first floor has three-light Yorkshire sashes with wedge lintels, and there is a moulded eaves course.
The byre has a 20th-century board door flanked by a 20th-century two-light casement window with a wooden lintel to the left and a 20th-century garage door to the right. The house has a swept roof with gable coping, shaped kneelers, and end stacks.
