Description

The Former Methodist Chapel in Robin Hood's Bay, built in 1779, is a Wesleyan Chapel with a date inscribed in relief letters on a sunk panel in the south wall. The building features herringbone-tooled sandstone on a plinth with stone coping, alternating-blocked raised quoins, and a stepped eaves band. It has a pantiled roof and is a large structure on two levels, with the rear section accommodating the top of the gallery positioned higher up the hill. The street-facing side has one tall storey with two wide bays. On the right side, there is a two-leaf six-panel door set in a plain reveal with a keyed wedge lintel. Two very large fixed lights with glazing bars and margin lights also have keyed lintels and projecting cills. The roof is hipped with stone ridges. Steep steps rise alongside the left return, which has two storeys and a basement, featuring four bays and a one-bay raised section on the left. The left return has four replaced sashes with glazing bars and an inserted basement door. There is a small flat-roofed porch with a six-panel door on the inner return at the far left.

Inside, the chapel has been converted into a concert hall above and a picture gallery below. The upper floor retains the original raked, concentric panelled gallery seating.
