Description
Burton House and Cliff Heads is a house that has been divided into two dwellings. It likely dates from the early 18th century and was raised and renovated in the later 18th century and 19th century. The building is constructed from coursed herringbone-tooled sandstone, with the upper part, above a first-floor band, made of finer quality stone. It features a pantiled roof and rendered chimneys. The structure is two storeys high with a basement and has four bays that are nearly symmetrical. The alternating-block raised quoins add to its character.
Burton House has four steps leading up to a central four-panel door, which is probably in its original opening, and is topped by a renewed flat hood supported by brackets. To the left, there are two replaced sash windows in wooden box frames on each floor. There is a small barred chamfered opening for the basement, which has a fixed light, and a Yorkshire sash window in a well under an iron grille to the right. Cliff Heads features a 20th-century boarded door, located next to the Burton House door under a bracketed flat hood. To the right of this door is a 19th-century sash window with margin lights, and the first floor has replaced sash windows in box frames. The building has coved eaves, 19th-century gable copings, raised square kneelers, and end stacks. The rendered right return has modern doors and windows. The property is included for its group value.
