Description
The Mackwood headstone, located at the north-east corner of the nave of St. Hilda's Church, is an early to mid-19th century memorial. It is made of tall pink sandstone and features a shaped top with a narrow raised border. The headstone commemorates members of a seagoing family, primarily young men who drowned or died abroad, with recorded deaths spanning from 1825 to 1837. One inscription reads:
"I've gained my Post and am at ease
Escaped the dangers of the seas
My Dangers past my troubles oer
Safe landed on a milder shore."
