Description
The structure consists of a churchyard wall, gate piers, gates, and a stable located to the north of the Church of St. Hilda. It dates from the late 18th century and early 20th century. The wall is made of coursed herringbone-tooled sandstone and features a wooden gate. The stable has a pantiled roof with stone copings and kneelers. The wall stands about 4 feet high and is topped with thick flat coping slabs.
There are a pair of plain gate piers with ball finials that support panelled oak gates, which have a top rail carved with an inscription in memory of George and Margaret Macmillan. An opening near the west end has jambs that also carry similar ball finials. The one-storey, 2-bay stable features Dutch doors on the north and south sides, along with an inserted boarded door and a small window on the east end. The stable has a high-pitched roof with pointed kneelers beneath slab copings.
The church is centrally located in the parish, but it is not close to any large settlement, which means that worshippers required a place to shelter their horses during services.
