Description
The stable or byre located to the north of Bay Ness Old Farmhouse is a farm building dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone and features a pantiled roof with stone copings. The building is single-storey and consists of five bays, with the left bay having a returned gable. There are two stable-type doors set beneath heavy stone lintels, and a loading door is situated in the returned gable end. The rear of the building displays two raked loading dormers and has a very high pitched roof. Inside, there is an upper cruck truss at the north end, which is halved at the top and has a collar. The tie beams are now positioned at eaves level, but sockets for earlier ties can be seen about two feet lower. The structure includes five levels of stout purlins. A wing that projects from the lower part of the returned gable has been unroofed and is not considered of special interest.
