Description

Comber House is a rectory, now divided into two dwellings, built between 1839 and 1841 by J P Pritchett for Rev John Richard Hill. It is constructed of hammer-dressed sandstone on a low plinth, with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The street-facing side features a two-storey, three-window front to the left, accompanied by a slightly set-back, lower two-storey, three-window service wing to the right. The main entrance is an 8-panel door set within an architrave and cornice, flanked by 12-pane sash windows with recessed panels beneath. The first floor has three 12-pane sashes, all with flat arches of voussoirs. The service wing has a central 6-panel door in a plain architrave, with a small, newly inserted lattice window to the left, and 12-pane sashes with stone sills on either side, along with three smaller similar windows on the first floor, all featuring flat arches.

At the rear, there is a full-height canted bay at the centre of the higher end, with paired modillions at the eaves throughout. The left side has a hipped roof with ridge stacks, while the service wing has a central ridge stack and an end stack that pierces the hipped roof to the right. Inside, there is an open string straight staircase with a cast-iron balustrade, a turned newel, and a moulded and wreathed handrail. The end room to the left contains a built-in glazed cupboard with a dentilled cornice and moulding, with glazing bars that echo the elongated hexagonal shape of the staircase balustrade. The building was unoccupied at the time of resurvey.
