Description

The stables at Newhouse consist of two stable blocks built in 1750 and the late 19th century. They are constructed from English bond brick and feature a tiled roof. The western block, dating from the 18th century, is two stories high with a three-window front that faces the courtyard. It includes elliptical-arched carriage doors, planked doors, and two-light cast-iron casements on the first floor. The rear of this block has planked doors, leaded cross windows, and some blocked openings.

The south gable on the right side has an ornamental two-story, three-window facade, with the center section projecting forward. It features blind windows on the ground floor and a late 19th-century clock face in the center of the first floor, flanked by two-light cyma-mullioned windows. There is a moulded cornice and a pediment with a blocking course above. An octagonal wooden cupola sits on top, featuring round-arched openings and an ogee lead roof. The left return has leaded casements and wavy bargeboards.

The range to the north, which is at right angles to the first block, faces the courtyard and is dated 1885 above the central door. It has four segmental blocked windows on either side and three gabled dormers, with a half-hipped tiled roof and wavy bargeboards, and no openings at the rear. The 1885 block and its alterations were designed by William Eyre Matcham.
