1924/0/10021 MIDDLE ROAD 04-DEC-03 Norleywood Thatch Cottage
II Cottage. Late C18 or early C19, extended to east and west later in the C19. The original structure is of two bays built of cob which has been cement rendered to the front with thatched roof swept into eyebrows at the front, hipped to the west and gabled to the east with end rendered chimneystack. One storey and attics: two windows. Mid C19 wooden casements. Gabled porch to original plank and ledged door. The rear elevation is of unrendered cob and has no windows. Attached to the east is a small cob extension, currently with corrugated iron roof. To the west is a later C19 one storey brick and concrete extension with one tripartite C19 casement window and slate roof with end chimneystack. INTERIOR: The plan form comprises a large eastern room, staircase hall and further room in the extension to the west on the ground floor and two bedrooms on the first floor. It retains the original wooden partitions, early C19 wooden fire surround with C19 cast iron range in ground floor eastern room, later C19 wooden fireplace and tiled surround to ground floor west room, together with cupboard, straight flight staircase with plain stick balusters and original doors,plasterwork, floors and ceilings. An unusually unaltered example of a cottage built of local cob and thatch retaining original plan form and internal features.
