Description

Thatch Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with extensions added to the east and west later in the 19th century. The original structure consists of two bays made of cob, which has been cement rendered at the front. It features a thatched roof that sweeps into eyebrows at the front, is hipped to the west, and gabled to the east, with an end rendered chimneystack. The cottage is one storey with attics and has two windows, which are mid-19th century wooden casements. There is a gabled porch leading to the original plank and ledged door. The rear elevation is made of unrendered cob and has no windows.

To the east, there is a small cob extension with a corrugated iron roof. To the west, there is a later 19th century single-storey brick and concrete extension that features one tripartite 19th century casement window and a slate roof with an end chimneystack.

Inside, the layout includes a large room to the east, a staircase hall, and another room in the west extension on the ground floor, along with two bedrooms on the first floor. The interior retains original wooden partitions, an early 19th century wooden fire surround with a 19th century cast iron range in the eastern room, a later 19th century wooden fireplace with a tiled surround in the west room, a cupboard, a straight flight staircase with plain stick balusters, and original doors, plasterwork, floors, and ceilings. Thatch Cottage is an unusually unaltered example of a cottage built from local cob and thatch, maintaining its original plan form and internal features.
