Description

Rhinefield House Hotel is a large country house built between 1888 and 1890 by architects W.H. Romaine-Walker and Tanner for Miss Mabel Walker and later her husband Lieutenant Commander L. Walker-Munro. The building is constructed from squared rough-faced Purbeck stone with Bath stone dressings and features plain tile stacks and moulded brick stacks. It showcases a Jacobethan style with Gothic, Flamboyant, Tudor, and even Renaissance motifs.

The house is 2½ stories tall and has a double pile layout with five bays, cross wings at each end, and a taller hall on the garden side that projects forward at a lower level, creating a service courtyard. The entrance front features a central two-story porch with a four-centred archway in a square frame, an armorial tablet above, and a three-light transomed window. It is flanked by stepped diagonal buttresses and an octagonal turret on the left side, along with a first-floor corbelled balcony. The right side has two first-floor oriel windows, while elsewhere there are small mullioned windows. A crenellated parapet runs across the building, leading to a pierced balustrade on a two-story canted bay on the right wing. The gables of the wings have coped verges with pinnacles, and the central roof features two-light gabled dormers at different levels.

Inside, the hotel is known for its eclectic richness, with impressive rooms that reflect the overall grandeur of the house. The Great Hall, measuring 30 meters by 8 meters, boasts a full hammerbeam roof and a full-height bay window overlooking the garden. The Dining Room is adorned with panelling, a 17th-century Baroque fireplace, and an Armada plaque by the French Huguenot Aumonier. The Smoking Room is designed in a Moorish style inspired by The Alhambra, featuring a horseshoe arch arcade and stalactite plasterwork. On the first floor, the bedrooms are styled in a 'tous les Louis' manner, complete with Fragonard ceilings.
