Description
The Nomansland War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure designed as an open shelter or shrine. It features half-timbered construction with red brick panels arranged in basketweave and herringbone patterns. The memorial stands on a three-stepped stone base and is styled in a Tudoresque manner, topped with a tiled roof. The two side walls and the open front are secured with iron grills attached to the main timber uprights, with the front grill designed as a double gate.
A timber cross hangs from the front gable, and above the entrance gates is the inscription "THE WELL OF SACRIFICE" in red painted Celtic-style lettering. On the rear elevation, there is a stone trough that is part of the stone base.
Inside, there is an integral timber seat, and a timber panel displaying the roll of honour for both world wars is mounted on the back wall, with the names inscribed in gold lettering. A small brass tablet located at the bottom left of the wooden panel notes the Well of Sacrifice and its date of rededication.
The dedication around the four sides of the shrine reads "A WELL OF/ WATER/ SPRINGING UP UNTO/ ETERNAL LIFE" in red and gold painted Celtic-style letters.
