Description
The Church of St Mary is a parish church built in 1834 by T Benham, with later alterations by Butterfield in 1891. The church features walls made of red brick in English bond, accented with stone dressings, and has stepped buttresses, particularly diagonal ones at the corners. It has tall bands, window heads, and eave fascia, all topped with slate roofs. The nave consists of three bays and has very narrow aisles, while the western tower incorporates the entrance lobby and west door. The chancel, which is taller, was added during the later phase of construction.
The church has coupled lancet windows, with the eastern bay (the original east end) displaying triple lancets beneath two additional lancets and two quatrefoils. Each wall of the chancel features two lancets, and the east end has a higher quatrefoil window. The tower is divided into three stages and includes pointed and chamfered arches within hoodmoulds, a crenellated parapet, and plain cemented corner pinnacles.
Inside, the church has a plain interior with slender columns, and the arcading features opening timber framing, which is repeated at a higher level across the chancel. The lower walls of the chancel are panelled. The pulpit and lectern are positioned on the line of the first step, somewhat related to the original layout. There is an octagonal font styled in the 15th century. A western gallery is supported by slender columns, and a Royal Coat of Arms, possibly from 1834, hangs on the north wall.
