Description

The Copythorne War Memorial stands beside the main Romsey Road in a prominent location. The memorial dates to the aftermath of the First World War. It consists of a Celtic-style granite cross set on a roughly-hewn, tapered column, which in turn sits on a square plinth. The plinth is set upon a square, single-step base. Carved on the north-west face of the plinth is the inscription “IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY/ OF THOSE OF THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919,” followed by the names of 34 individuals who lost their lives in that conflict and the inscription “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.” A marble, scroll-style plaque lies on the north-west face of the base, commemorating the Second World War. This plaque is inscribed with the years 1939-1945, followed by the names of 18 individuals who lost their lives and the inscription “THEY ALSO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ THAT WE MIGHT LIVE.” A late addition is a gravel enclosure, including a paved area in front of the memorial, and a timber post and chain fence, which are not of group value.
