Description

Stydd House and Stydd Close are a small country house, built between 1871 and 1874 by G Devey and later for Lady Surtees. The house is constructed of brick, with diaperwork detailing using stone dressings, with plastered or tilehung sections to the first floor, half-timbered gables, and an old plain tile roof. It has moulded brick stacks. The building is in an irregular Domestic Revival style, two storeys and an attic, two rooms deep, and has four bays, with lower service buildings extending from one end.

The garden front has a main section to the left, consisting of two wide gabled bays flanking a smaller central bay. The left two bays are divided into separate dwellings, with a wall projecting from the right side of them. To the right is a further bay, followed by a lower-roofed bay. A recessed stone doorway with a side light, both with fanlights above, sits within the bay between the gables. The left gabled bay contains a rectangular bay with a stone five-light transomed window. A jettied first floor extends over this bay and the doorway, with a three or five-light casement window on the first floor. A gabled dormer is above the other bay. The next gabled bay features a two-storey canted bay with a stone ground floor window and a first floor string, and a half-timbered gable supported on brackets. The following bay has diaperwork and a casement window under the eaves. The right-hand lower bay has a large end stack and a projecting bread oven.
