Description
The Church of St Matthew is a parish church built in 1855 by J P Harrison. It features walls made of coursed limestone, a plinth, and stepped buttresses, with windows that have Decorated tracery. The roof is notable for a bell turret that breaks the ridge above the chancel. The nave consists of four bays with narrow aisles that extend to the west bay of the chancel, which has two bays, a small north vestry, and a south porch. The bell turret is topped with a shingled broad spire above a timber-framed bell stage, which is partly shingled, and it rests on a stone base that has a slightly battered form. Inside, a prominent feature is the pair of chancel arches that support the bell turret, which spring from decorative bosses. The chancel is lined with panelling, while the rest of the interior is generally plain, featuring a font in the style of the 15th century.
