Description

Hanger Farmhouse is a timber-frame farmhouse dating to the 17th century, with alterations in the 18th, early 19th, and 20th centuries. The original timber frame, initially with wattle and daub and brick infill, has been largely encased in a brick refacing and later additions, topped with an old plain tile roof. The main block is two storeys high, three bays wide with an additional smoke/lobby bay, and projects slightly to the rear. Half-hip bays have been added to each end of the original block, and a 19th-century wing extends from the rear of the smoke/lobby bay. The front elevation features a smoke/lobby bay to the left, and a 18th-century gabled porch with an arched opening, positioned to the left of centre. Large 20th-century windows are present on the ground floor on each side, and a smaller window is located at the left end. The first floor has a three-light casement in each bay, except the stack bay, and two-light casements in the added end bays. The roof is half-hipped, with a large ridge stack in the stack bay. Inside the rear outshot, the original timber frame is exposed, featuring three panels with curved braces connecting posts to the wallplate. The original house plan remains intact, with the first floor originally open to the roof space, supported by queen post trusses.
