Description

Old Bank Cottage and No. 57 (JR Hayward Butchers) represent a pair of cottages with origins in the 17th century, significantly remodelled in the 18th century and again in the 19th century when a shop was added, with 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of brick with an old plain tile roof. Originally three bays, two bays were added to one side, and these, along with one of the original bays, now form Old Bank Cottage; an 18th-century wing extends to the rear of the other bays, and another to the right-hand end, with a late 19th-century shop. The front elevation has a single-storey shop to the left, featuring a pent-roofed hood over 20th-century plate-glass shop windows. To the left of the shop is a 19th-century bay with a five-light segmental-head casement, a plank front door is located between the shop and casement, followed by a similar three-light casement. The right-hand bays have two-light casements and a plank front door. A low link bay on the right-hand end provides access to Old Bank House. Above the left-hand bay is a tile-hung, two-light gabled dormer; over the right-hand bays are two further two-light gabled dormers. A ridge stack is centrally located.
