Description
Thickholme Bridge, part of the Thirlmere Aqueduct, is an aqueduct that also serves as a footbridge. It was built in 1893 by Smith & Co. for the Manchester Corporation Water Works and has undergone some modifications in the 20th century. The bridge features cast iron side panels that conceal a ribbed steel deck, which supports three large water pipes that cross the Troutbeck. These pipes are enclosed by the outer balustrade. The structure has a single span with a delicate segmental arch, and the spandrels are pierced with roundels that have a foliated design, decreasing in size towards the center. Above the arch, there is a sub-parapet adorned with zigzag decoration, topped by a decorative balustrade featuring foiled arch heads. Inscribed plates on the sides indicate 'Manchester Corporation Water Works 1893'.
