Description
Iredale Place Cottage and adjoining barn, now a private house and garage, dates from the late 17th century, with 20th-century additions and alterations. The building is constructed of rendered slate rubble with a graduated greenslate roof and cement-rendered chimney stacks. It is two storeys high, originally comprising three bays with a barn to the right, all under a common roof. The central doorway is a 19th-century top-glazed door within a chamfered stone surround, now sheltered by a 20th-century glazed porch. A further 20th-century door provides access to a cross passage. Original windows are 2- and 3-light chamfered stone-mullioned, with two similar single-light windows blocked. The barn has a 20th-century sliding garage door and a single slit vent. A rear doorway features a chamfered surround and lintel inscribed and dated "I&ER LORR 1690". A stair extension has 2-light chamfered stone-mullioned windows. A further rear extension, two storeys and single bay, was added in 1943. The interior retains boxed-in beams in each room. An upper-floor fireplace has a plaster hood inscribed and dated "I & E R 1692". A ground-floor rear room features a built-in panelled bread cupboard, moved from another part of the house and dated and inscribed "I & MH 1690," a detail that doesn't align with the other initials and is likely imported.
