Description

Mains Farmhouse is likely to date from the early to mid-18th century. It is built of roughcast stone with stone slate and slate roofing. The west elevation is two storeys high with three bays. A single-storey, lean-to outhouse projects from the south return. The windows are square with slightly chamfered reveals and sash windows, some featuring horns. The ground floor of the first bay has two windows, and a rectangular window is located in the ground floor of the third bay. A central entrance has a half-glazed door. The gables are coped with kneelers, and there are gable-end stacks. Two attic lights are visible on the north return. The rear of the farmhouse includes a gabled wing, coped with kneelers on the north side. A later, two-storey outshut is situated under a catslide roof to the north of this wing. The south return of the wing contains two square windows, one being a sash window, and a plain entrance. The north return of the wing has two windows of two lights with recessed flat-faced mullions, as well as an attic light. The gable of the wing has two attic lights and a squat stack, with a cross-axial stack also present. The outshut features a two-light window and a sash window on its south side.
