Description
The former Dame School, located approximately 15 meters north of Crosthwaite House, is an early 19th-century building. It is constructed of stone rubble and features a slate roof. This small, square, two-storey structure has a gabled design and is set into the slope of the ground. The southwest corner is marked by large quoins. The south elevation includes a small window at the half-basement level and a larger window on the ground floor. There is an east gable-end stack. The roof is in poor condition, as noted in 1987. Access to the entrance, which is located under a collapsing pentice on the west elevation, is via steps on the side. The basement contains stop-chamfered beams and joists, as well as a well, while the ground floor features a fireplace. The building was recorded as being used as a school around 1820 and is included for its group value.
