Description

Hollin Bank and Hollin Cottage is a house and cottage, with the house now divided into three units. The building is dated 1853, as indicated by a datestone with the initials S.W. It features ashlar walls with limestone dressings and a slate roof, complete with copings on the gables and four sets of decorative stone chimney stacks: two pairs set diagonally, one consisting of five square stacks in a row, and one with three round stacks on the right-hand gable.

The cottage and the main part of the house have an almost symmetrical layout, with a wing set back to the right that has a gable end facing the road. This wing appears to be a different build and includes rusticated limestone quoins, roughly dressed stone, and a cill band at the first floor. The central projecting gable has stone coping and kneelers, topped with a tulip finial.

There is a stone porch with a ball finial on the gable and a diagonally boarded door decorated with a fleur-de-lys under a label mould in the cottage to the left. The cottage features two paired sash windows on either side of the porch and two paired sash windows above. The ground floor of the house has a tripartite sash window with a stone surround and labels, paired sashes on either side of the bay, and quadruple sashes with heavy timber mullions in the right wing. The upper floor includes a tripartite sash window with a moulded surround and labels, along with two paired sashes. The wing features a tripartite window with a pointed arch head and stone voussoirs on the upper floor, as well as an oriel window on the side.
