Description

The Keswick War Memorial is a tall stone structure situated in a triangular area of land bordered by Penrith Road, Station Street, and the River Greta. The front of the memorial faces south-west along Station Road. It features a tall pedimented pylon that stands on a rectangular platform and a three-stage base. The entablature beneath the pediment is inscribed with the years MCMXIV - MCMXIX in incised lettering. A relief carving on the front of the pylon depicts a figure of Victory, leaning on a sheathed sword adorned with laurel wreaths.

Two Honister slate plaques are affixed to the front face of the base, covering the original incised inscriptions. The upper plaque reads "TO KEEP FRESH THE MEMORY/ OF OUR BRAVE MEN WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WARS." The plaque below lists the names of 109 local men who died in the First World War. Matching slate plaques are located on the north-west and south-east sides of the memorial. The upper plaques on both sides read "1939 - 1945," while the lower plaques list the names of those who died in the Second World War.

On the rear of the memorial is a bronze plaque cast in relief that features two crossed olive branches and the inscription: "COCKERMOUTH KESWICK & PENRITH RAILWAY COMPANY/ IN PROUD & HONOURED MEMORY OF THE EMPLOYEES OF THE COMPANY/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING & COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1918." Below this inscription are the names of seven individuals, along with their rank and regiment.
