Description
The Church of St Oswald is an unusual building from the 14th century, featuring an arcade and roof dating from around 1562 and the 17th century. It has a sturdy castellated west tower with a batter and a narrow cusped lancet window, along with a south porch, giving it very sturdy proportions. The interior remains largely original, with two naves separated by a two-tier arcade, where the upper arches rest on the apex of the lower ones. The arcades do not extend to the ridge, but there is a king-post open roof (not identical) over each nave. The church also contains mural monuments from the early 19th century and a bust of Wordsworth in relief, created in 1851 by Thomas Woolner.
