Description

The Station is a viewing station built in the late 18th century, constructed from stone rubble. It stands two storeys high and features canted bays at both the front and rear, along with an embattled parapet. The building is now in a ruinous state, with the front wall having collapsed. There is a first-floor sill band, and some slate hanging remains can be seen at the rear. The first floor has large window openings on the returns and a narrow opening in the remaining part of the front wall. The ground floor of the returns has lower recesses. The rear of the building includes a canted bay with an entrance and a first-floor window opening, flanked by blind windows, as well as narrow window openings on either side and slate hanging on the remains of the parapet.

The wall connects the station to a rock outcrop at the rear, featuring a round-headed archway and a round-headed opening with the foundations of a structure behind. Inside, there are remnants of cross walls, a rear gabled wall with a stack and fireplace, and a vaulted chamber on the ground floor. The rear canted bay includes a stone flying stair with moulded treads. The Station was used as a viewing point for Lake Windermere during a time when picturesque principles dictated that landscapes should be viewed from specific vantage points that highlighted their scenic qualities, linking it to the early tourist industry. The property is owned by The National Trust.
