Description

Braithwaite Fold is a house dating from around 1700, with modifications made in the early 20th and 21st centuries. It is constructed of rendered rubble and features a Lakeland slate roof and stone mullioned windows.

The building has a rectangular shape with a Baffle entry plan, consisting of two original rooms. It has been extended to the east and further raised, with a staircase providing access to the first-floor rooms.

On the south elevation, there are five bays: a two-bay range to the left of the entrance, a central two-bay range with a door beneath a spinning gallery, and a larger bay to the right. The windows are a mix of two, three, and four light mullions, with a single cross window beneath the gallery. Most of these windows are early 20th-century replacements, except for those in the east end bay, which are 21st-century insertions. The first floor features a two-bay wide gallery with an overhanging roof supported by posts and a turned baluster railing. Each original gable has a rendered chimney stack. The rear elevation includes four and five light mullioned windows flanking an inserted entrance with a bracketed hood, along with two, three, and four light windows above. The later east end bay, which is slightly set back, has similar inserted windows and a door.

Inside, several original features remain, including a dog-leg staircase with oak treads (though the balustrade is a replacement), chamfered cross beams, floorboards, panelling, and various doors and architraves. There is a small cellar with a fireplace and a blocked stair located under the east end of the house. The roof consists of several jointed tie beam trusses with curved struts, two tiers of through purlins, and a square set ridge piece.
