Description
The Parish Church of St Martin is located on Lake Road in Bowness-on-Windermere. A church has existed on this site since 1203, with the current building dating from around 1480. The upper part of the tower and the east end were added in 1870. The church is constructed from local slate rubble with sandstone dressings and features very sturdy arcade piers. The walls are adorned with painted verses and scrolls, some dating from the 17th century and others from the Victorian era. There is also some medieval glass and a monument by Flaxman, along with the painted Royal Arms from 1761. The church is a significant part of the village center, grouped with nearby buildings including a hairdresser, Old Kirk Cafe, Old Curio Shop, Stags Head Inn, Rose Cottage, and several others along Church Street and Robinson Place.
