Description
No. 1 Church Street is a building likely constructed in the mid-19th century, located on the north side of the Church in Bowness. The ground floor is made of painted rusticated stone and features a cornice or stringcourse, while the two upper storeys are roughcast. The building has a canted angle that includes a Victorian doorway and an oriel window above it. There are moulded eaves supported by wooden brackets. The ground floor has two Victorian doorways with cornices and two Victorian shop fronts. The first floor features sash windows with cornices and iron rails on the projecting moulded sills, while the top floor has plain sash windows.
No. 1, which has previously housed a hairdresser, the Old Kirk Cafe, and an Old Curio Shop, is part of an important group of buildings in the village center that includes the Stags Head Inn and Rose Cottage, as well as the Parish Church of St Martin, Lake Road, White House, Robinson Place, New Hall Inn with attached buildings to the south Lowside, and Fold Head on Fallbarrow Road.
