Description

A barn, likely dating from the 16th or 17th century, stands to the south-east of Atkinson Ground Farmhouse and Cottages. The barn is constructed of stone rubble with a slate roof. It is a 4-bay structure featuring cruck trusses. The north-west gable end, facing the lane, has an entrance and a 4-light mullioned window with two intermediate bars; small holes are positioned above the window, possibly for pigeons. The north-east side has a barn entrance now fitted with a gate, and a 2-light mullioned window with intermediate bars is located to the left. On the south-west side is a blocked winnowing door, with an opening to the right. The rear of the barn is built into the hillside, incorporating an opening. Inside, there are two cruck trusses: one is a raised cruck, supported by a stone pier and wood post, featuring a tie beam and windbraces; the second exhibits a tie beam, collar and windbraces, with curved principal rafters.
