Description
The Hawkshead War Memorial is made of sandstone and is situated in the churchyard of the Church of St Michael and All Angels, which is a Grade I listed building. The memorial features a Celtic-style wheel-head cross. The front of the cross is adorned with carved Scandinavian interlace designs surrounding a central boss at the top. It stands on a rectangular tapered shaft that also displays Scandinavian interlace designs, depicting the patron saint, St George, as he defeats a dragon. The dragon's coils are transformed into interlace, yet St George manages to spear its open mouth.
On the shaft, there is an inscription in relief, crafted in a Celtic-style script, which reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF HAWKSHEAD WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR 1914 – 1918" followed by names. The rear of the cross and shaft features similar carved interlace designs, including a cross, with another inscription at the base of the shaft in Celtic-style script that states: "LET THOSE WHO COME AFTER SEE TO IT THAT THEIR NAMES BE NOT FORGOTTEN 1939 – 1945" along with names. The sides of the memorial are also decorated with carved interlace designs. The shaft is mounted on a rectangular base with three steps.
