Description
The monument to John Wilkinson, erected in 1808, is located approximately 17 meters north of the junction with Dixon Wood Close in Upper Allithwaite. This Grade II* listed structure is made of cast iron, painted black with some gilding. It features a square base that is bolted to stone steps and has the inscription "LABORE ET HONORE" in raised gilded letters. The plain plinth bears a memorial inscription, although the letters for the first two words, "HERE LIES," have been removed. The obelisk includes a round plaque with a gilded relief profile bust of Wilkinson above an inscription, as well as a top ball and lightning conductor. The rear (north) face has plaques that record the monument's later history. Originally erected on Wilkinson's grave in the garden of his house, Castlehead, the monument was moved when his body was re-interred in Lindale churchyard and re-erected in its current position in 1863. It was restored in 1984.
