Description
Castle Head Bridge is a bridge with sluice gates, built around 1800. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and rubble, featuring iron railings on the north parapet. The bridge has two segmental arches, with cutwaters that project to the north and south, each containing slots for sluice gates. The southern cutwaters are significantly taller than those on the north side. The solid parapets have bands located below their copings.
Historically, John Wilkinson, an ironmaster who owned the Castle Head estate, implemented a land drainage and improvement scheme starting in 1778. He was also involved with an early large-scale plan to enclose Morecambe Bay, which was never executed. The bridge is recognized as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
