Description
Hampsfell Hospice is a shelter built between 1835 and 1846 from dressed limestone, commissioned by Reverend T. Remington. It is a square structure featuring stone benches around its base and a top frieze and cornice band with iron railings. The east face has an entrance with a gate and Greek lettering on the frieze that reads "RODODAKTYLOS EOS," which translates to "Rosy-fingered Dawn," a quote from Homer. The returns and rear of the building have small lights with splayed reveals, and projecting stone steps with a handrail lead up to a flat roof that includes a turntable for indicating landmarks. Inside, the hospice has two canted angles, one featuring a fireplace and the other a recess. Black boards with white lettering on all sides display a notice and three poems, one of which is dated 1846. The structure is supported by twelve posts that hold a chain surrounding the hospice.
