Description
A house, likely dating from the 17th century, in Hawkshead. It is built with roughcast render and has a slate roof. The house is two storeys high and has five bays, with the outer bays projecting as gabled wings. A slate dripcourse runs along the front of the central three bays. The ground floor has sash windows with glazing bars in the third and fourth bays. The first floor has casement windows with iron opening lights; the first bay has steps leading to a first-floor terrace supported by a round stone rubble pier. Other features include a first-floor window with small panes, a casement, and a glazed door. The entrance between the third and fourth bays has a trellis porch and a part-glazed six-panel door. The fifth bay has casement windows, one with an iron opening light on the first floor. The left return has a small first-floor window, and the right return has a casement and a half-glazed entrance. A chimney stack runs across the center of the building. The first bay has a gable-end stack, and the fifth bay has a projecting return lateral stack with set-offs, along with a cross-axial stack. The interior is reported to contain timber partitions. It is believed that William Wordsworth lodged here while attending Hawkshead Grammar School. The wing on the first bay was used as a chapel until 1862.
