Description
Birkettfield and the adjoining former stable is a former farmhouse and stable dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with significant alterations made in the 19th century. The building features painted roughcast walls beneath a graduated greenslate roof, along with rendered chimney stacks. The stable is constructed of mixed slate and cobble rubble. It is two storeys high and consists of three bays, with a rear extension and a single-bay stable to the right, all under a common roof, creating an overall L-shape.
The entrance includes a 20th-century door and sash windows, with the windows to the right of the entrance being tripartite, all set in painted stone surrounds. The sash windows on the extreme right have enlarged surrounds, and there is a gabled porch beyond. The former stable has a plank door and casement windows beneath slate lintels, with an end wall featuring a loft door. The extension contains sash and casement windows with glazing bars, also in painted stone surrounds.
Inside, there is a mid-17th-century staircase with symmetrically turned balusters, a closed string, moulded handrails, and ball finials, which has been re-used on top of a stone dog-leg stair. The upper rooms are divided by early 18th-century panelling that has been inserted beside a tie beam. One room features a panelled box bed with pierced fretted upper panels, likely dating from around 1700, along with a stone fireplace and salt cupboard of similar age.
