Description

Thwaite Hall is a former manor house that has been converted into two private houses. It features a 19th-century inscription above the entrance stating it was rebuilt in 1555 and modernised in 1876, with some 20th-century alterations. The building has roughcast walls and a graduated greenslate roof, which includes a gable stone chimney stack on the left and a large stone ridge chimney stack on the right. It is two storeys high with four bays.

The gabled porch, added in 1876, has a plank door set in a Tudor-style chamfered surround. To the right of the porch, there is a round-headed three-light stone-mullioned window under a hoodmould, along with a small round-headed fire window at the extreme right. The other windows, which are two- and three-light under hoodmoulds, also appear to date from 1876. A projecting gabled bay on the right features a 20th-century door within a 19th-century chamfered surround. The end wall to the right has a projecting carved-head water spout with a mouth opening. A crease on the chimney indicates a higher original roof line.

Inside, there is a large moulded stone segmental-arched inglenook. Originally named Hutton Ralf, the manor belonged to the Hutton family before passing by marriage to the Dalston family and being sold around 1682 to Mr. Williams of Johnby. The adjoining outbuildings are not of interest.
