Description
The Lodge is a building dating from around 1879, designed for James Harvey Insole as a lodge to Chargot House. It is constructed from red and glazed buff bricks in Flemish bond and features a steeply pitched roof adorned with decorative ridge tiles and patterned clay tiles. The building has overhanging eaves with sprockets and decorative bargeboards, as well as a central brick stack with a moulded cap.
The Lodge has a two-cell plan and is designed in a picturesque Gothic style, standing one and a half storeys tall with two bays. It retains original sash windows with glazing bars, including a two-light window in a hipped dormer on the left, paired windows in a gablet on the right, and one window to the left of the gabled porch, which is supported by decorative wooden brackets. The entrance features a plank door. The facade displays polychrome decoration, including red brick string courses and patterned tympana with voussoirs made of alternating red and buff bricks. The left return gable end, which faces the drive to Chargot, has more ornate decoration. Originally, a single-storey verandah with a patterned clay tile roof, supported by decorative wooden brackets, enclosed the left return and rear elevations, contributing to a lively overall composition.
