Description
Knap Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into two cottages. It dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century and was altered in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of red sandstone random rubble and features a double Roman tiled roof. There is an external stack on the right gable end and large lateral stacks on the rear elevation, with a bread oven projection at the rear end on the right. The plan likely consists of three cells and a cross passage, and the building is set into a hillside with the gable end facing the road.
It has one and a half storeys and is arranged in a 2:1 bay configuration. The 19th-century windows include two and three-light casements, and there is a dormer on the first floor that rises from below the eaves. The roof extends to a porch that is unlit on the upper storey. On the ground floor, there is one window to the left and two to the right of a window in a weatherboarded bay with a double Roman tiled roof. Another casement window is located to the right of the porch, and there is a plank door. The windows in the end bay on the right have astragal leading. The interior has not been seen, and the two lateral stacks at the rear may be a result of the restricted site.
